An optical communications repeater is used in a fiber-optic communications system to regenerate an optical signal. Such repeaters are used to widen the outreach of optical communications links by conquering loss due to attenuation of the optical fiber so that the signal can cover longer distances or be received on the other side of an interference. Some repeaters are also accurate for distortion of the optical signal by converting it to an electrical signal, rectifying that electrical signal, and then retransmitting an optical signal.

Repeaters are energized by a constant direct current passed down a conductor near the middle of the cable. It (Electro-Optical repeater) combines a receiver and a transmitter. It is a piece of equipment that detects the optical signal and transforms it into an electrical signal. The electrical signal is then amplified to power a transmitter that produces an optical signal which goes through the next length of optical fiber. Repeaters attempt to preserve signal integrity and extend the distance over which data can safely travel.
