The Teraflops Research Chip (also called Polaris) is the first processor prototype developed by Intel’s Tera-scale Computing Research Program in multicore and energy efficient competing. The processor was briefly presented at IDF.
This chip is Intel’s first silicon tera-scale research prototype. It is the first programmable chip to deliver more than one trillion mathematical calculations per second (1 Teraflops) of performance while consuming very little power. This research project focuses on exploring new, energy-efficient designs for future multi-core chips, as well as approaches to interconnect and core-to-core communications.

The chip contains 80 cores, each containing two programmable floating point engines and one 5-port messaging passing router. Constructed using a 65 nm CMOS process, the die is 12.64mm by 21.72mm (274.5 mm2) and contains 100 million transistors. The package is connected through a 1248 pin LGA with 343 signal pins.
Running at 3.16GHz the chip achieved 1.01 TFLOPS with a total power consumption of 62 W and an on-chip temperature of increasing frequency to 5.7GHz and power to 265 W increased performance to 1.81 TFLOPS and later 2 TFLOPS.
- Rapid design – The tiled-design approach allows designers to use smaller cores that can easily be repeated across the chip.
- Network on a chip – In addition to the computer element, ach core contains a 5-port message passing router. These are connected in a 2D mesh network that implement message-passing. This mesh interconnect scheme could prove much more scalable than multi-core chip interconnects, allowing for better communications between the cores and delivering more processor performance.
- Fine-grain power management – The individual compute engines and data router in each core can be activated or put to sleep based on the performance required by the application a person is running. The chip is with world-class power efficiency – 1 teraflops requires only 62W, comparable to desktop processors sold today.
